Description
This is an engine room drawing for an Edwardian era turbine steam ship, circa 1905 This was right at the beginning of turbine propulsion at sea, the steam turbine only being in use for about 2 decades
The engine room is of no particular ship, but is a general ocean liners engine room from 1905, Military ships having different machinery layouts and different instrumentation
The view shows a rather rudimentary control platform, with telegraphs, and control or "manoeuvering" wheels to control steam throttles for both the ahead and astern turbines, as well as several auxiliaries Early turbine ships used "direct" drive to the propellers rather than a reduction gearbox, which made the engines rather large and inefficient. Lusitania and Mauretania where never considered "efficient" ships in their heyday
I DO like the sense of embellishment, even for working spaces of the era, with fluted columns, skylights, hanging light fixtures. this would all change after WWI
